In the small town of Palghar, Maharashtra, a 62-year-old woman named Kiran Kamdar has become a beacon of hope and compassion. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2018, a condition known for causing muscle stiffness, tremors, and difficulties with movement, Kiran refused to let her illness define her. Instead, she embarked on a mission to serve free, nutritious meals to patients and their families at the DM Petit Government Hospital.
Her journey, full of challenges and unwavering determination, has inspired many and earned her the affectionate title of “Khichdi Aaji” (Grandmother of Khichdi) in her community.
The Turning Point: Inspiration to Serve
In early 2021, during a routine visit to the DM Petit Government Hospital, Kiran noticed that many patients and their families were struggling to find proper meals. Some had traveled long distances and were unable to afford nutritious food. Seeing their plight moved her deeply, and she decided to take action.
Kiran approached local authorities and the hospital dean, seeking permission to distribute free khichdi—a simple yet wholesome dish made of rice and lentils. With their approval, her journey of selfless service began in February 2021.
A Day in the Life of Kiran Kamdar
Despite the physical challenges posed by Parkinson’s disease, Kiran’s dedication to her cause remains unshaken. Her day starts at 5 a.m. with the preparation of approximately 22 kilograms of khichdi.
With the help of her family, she ensures that every meal is cooked with care, maintaining high standards of hygiene and nutrition. By mid-morning, the meals are ready for distribution, and Kiran personally delivers them to the hospital, where over 100 patients and their families eagerly await her arrival.
This daily routine is not just about providing food; it’s about offering comfort, compassion, and a sense of community to those in need.
Overcoming Challenges with Resilience
Living with Parkinson’s disease presents numerous challenges, including physical limitations and fatigue. However, Kiran has never let these obstacles deter her mission. With the unwavering support of her family, she continues to show that determination and empathy can overcome even the toughest hurdles.
