Fincantieri Appoints Eugenio Santagata as Director of Naval Vessels Division, Effective September 1

Fincantieri, one of the world’s leading shipbuilding groups, has announced the appointment of Eugenio Santagata as the new Director of its Naval Vessels Division, effective September 1, 2025. Santagata will take over from Dario Deste, who is set to retire following an illustrious career within the company. Deste will, however, continue to support the CEO in guiding U.S. operations, ensuring continuity in Fincantieri’s international growth strategy.

With a strong background in defense, cybersecurity, and international operations, Santagata’s leadership marks a strategic move for Fincantieri, as it continues to strengthen its global footprint in naval and defense solutions.

A Seasoned Leader with Defense and Cybersecurity Expertise

A former officer in the Italian Army, Santagata has served in several high-stakes international operational contexts. His transition into executive leadership saw him take up roles at key defense organizations, including Elettronica SpA (ELT Group), where he was instrumental in driving international development and strategic planning in critical geopolitical zones.

Since 2015, Santagata has been deeply involved in cyber intelligence, cybersecurity, cryptography, and secure quantum communications. Notably, he founded CY4GATE, a cybersecurity-focused company, and spearheaded its market listing. He also played a pivotal role in transforming Telsy, a strategic arm of the TIM Group, during a crucial phase of the company’s relaunch. There, he served as Chief Public Affairs, Security & International Business Officer, reflecting his extensive grasp of global defense and tech sectors.

Academic and Strategic Acumen

Santagata brings with him a distinguished academic background. He holds degrees in Law and Political Science, and completed advanced military training at the Military School Nunziatella and the Military Academy of Modena. Furthering his expertise, he pursued international studies in the United States, earning an LL.M. in Law, an M.Sc. in Management, and an MBA from the London Business School.

His academic engagements continue through teaching roles at LUISS Business School and Khalifa University. In recognition of his contributions, he has been honored as a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic.

Leadership Transition at a Strategic Juncture

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, expressed his confidence in the leadership transition:

“We are pleased to welcome Eugenio Santagata to a strategic role for the future of our Group. His background combines solid experience in the defense sector with a strong international business vision. This blend of expertise will be key to tackling the global challenges ahead.”

Folgiero also extended heartfelt thanks to Dario Deste:

“Our deepest gratitude goes to Dario Deste for his remarkable contribution and steadfast leadership over the years. His continued involvement in our U.S. operations will be a valuable asset as we pursue further expansion.”
