Dubai, UAE – In a strategic move to strengthen its leadership in personal autonomous technologies and digital mobility services, General Motors (GM) has announced a major leadership transition for its Africa and Middle East Operations (AMEO). The announcement reflects GM’s long-term commitment to innovation, customer satisfaction, and sustainable growth as the company prepares to celebrate 100 years in the region.
Effective March 1, 2026, Jorge Plata, currently serving as Vice President of Sales, Service, and Marketing at GM Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean, will assume the position of President and Managing Director of GM AMEO. Plata will succeed Jack Uppal, who will transition to lead GM Canada after a successful three-year tenure overseeing the AMEO business.
Strengthening GM’s Global Leadership
Commenting on the appointment, Michael MacPhee, GM President for EMEA and ANZ, praised Plata’s leadership record and strategic acumen. “During his tenure at GM Mexico, Jorge has led the company through one of the most competitive and dynamic markets in the world,” MacPhee said. “He has a proven track record of focusing on our customers, sustaining trusted brands, and building strong partnerships that enable GM to thrive against both traditional rivals and emerging players.”
MacPhee emphasized that as GM approaches its centenary milestone in the Middle East and Africa, the company remains committed to building deeper connections with customers, partners, and governments across the region. “We are determined to chart the course of GM’s next century in the region by driving innovation, technology adoption, and customer trust,” he added.
Jorge Plata’s Vision for the Future
Expressing enthusiasm for his new role, Jorge Plata highlighted the opportunities that lie ahead for GM in Africa and the Middle East. “This is an incredible time to lead GM’s AMEO business. We have a world-class portfolio of connected vehicles, and we’re pioneering the region’s shift toward cutting-edge technologies like hands-free, eyes-on Super Cruise,” he said.
Plata further emphasized his commitment to collaboration with GM’s network of dealers, business partners, and employees to advance the company’s vision of future mobility. “I’m energized by the region’s bold ambitions and dynamic landscape. GM sees tremendous opportunities and a bright future in the Middle East and Africa as we continue shaping the future of transportation,” he stated.
A Legacy of Leadership and Growth
MacPhee also took the opportunity to thank Jack Uppal for his exceptional leadership and contributions to GM’s AMEO business. “Jack not only delivered consistent growth but also built strong relationships across the region. He led the strategy to bring more choice and technology to our customers across price points and propulsion systems,” said MacPhee.
During Uppal’s tenure, GM achieved notable milestones, including the successful turnaround of the GM Egypt business, which restored Chevrolet to its market leadership position. Under his guidance, GM strengthened its regional presence, expanded its product lineup, and enhanced its customer-centric approach.
Reflecting on his journey, Uppal expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead GM’s Africa and Middle East operations. “Serving as the leader of GM AMEO over the past three years has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” he said. “Together, we have delivered vehicles that excite our customers and achieved remarkable success alongside an exceptionally talented team. With his extensive experience, Jorge is well poised to sustain this momentum and guide the region toward continued success.”
Driving the Next Century of Innovation
GM’s leadership transition comes at a pivotal moment for the automotive industry, as the company accelerates its mission to redefine mobility through electric, connected, and autonomous vehicle technologies. With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and customer experience, GM aims to solidify its position as a leading mobility solutions provider in the Middle East and Africa.
As GM looks ahead to its second century in the region, the appointment of Jorge Plata underscores its commitment to transformative growth and technological leadership — ensuring that customers continue to experience world-class vehicles from brands they know and trust.
