Biome Raises ₹4 Crore to Turn Farm Waste into Sustainable Construction Materials

Climate-tech startup Biome Sustainability Ventures has raised ₹4 crore in seed funding to accelerate the development of sustainable construction materials made from agricultural waste. The round was fully backed by Rajesh K. Soin, a distinguished entrepreneur and alumnus of Delhi Technological University.

Funding to Drive Innovation and Expansion

The fresh capital will help the company scale across three key areas:

  • Research and product development to enhance material performance
  • Market expansion across institutional campuses and corporate spaces
  • Strategic partnerships in manufacturing, research, and distribution

This investment marks a critical step for the early-stage startup as it moves toward commercialization and larger-scale adoption of sustainable materials.

Turning Agricultural Waste into High-Performance Materials

Founded in 2024 by Sumeet Popli, Biome focuses on converting agricultural residue into engineered wood and furniture-grade materials.

These materials are designed as eco-friendly alternatives to:

  • Timber
  • Plastic-based construction products

By utilizing farm waste that is often burned after harvest, the startup aims to tackle major environmental issues such as:

  • Stubble burning
  • Deforestation
  • High carbon emissions in construction
  • Income instability in rural areas

Strong Environmental and Social Impact

Biome’s manufacturing model delivers measurable sustainability benefits, including:

  • Reduction in tree cutting for plywood and MDF
  • Lower carbon emissions from stubble burning
  • Additional income generation for rural communities

The company’s straw-based boards are non-toxic, low-emission, and suitable for indoor use, making them a viable alternative to conventional construction materials.

Growing Market Presence

Despite being a young startup, Biome has already begun working with:

  • Institutional campuses
  • Corporate workplaces
  • Sustainability-focused events

Its early traction highlights increasing demand for eco-friendly building materials in India’s construction and infrastructure sectors.

Government Support and Industry Recognition

Biome Sustainability Ventures has received backing from multiple Government of India initiatives, including:

  • Startup India Seed Fund Scheme
  • DST NIDHI PRAYAS
  • Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RAFTAAR)

The startup has also earned industry recognition:

  • Nominated for Earthshot Prize 2026
  • Best Emerging Innovation 2025 by CII

Incubation and Ecosystem Support

The company is incubated at leading innovation platforms such as:

  • DTU Innovation and Incubation Foundation
  • a-IDEA NAARM
  • Atal Incubation Centre CCMB
  • BIRAC BioNest

It also collaborates with organizations like:

  • Centre for Responsible Business
  • TechnoServe
  • J-PAL

Manufacturing Capacity and Future Outlook

Biome operates a manufacturing unit in Haryana with the capacity to process over 7,500 tonnes of agricultural residue annually.

As demand for sustainable construction materials rises globally, the startup is well-positioned to benefit from:

  • Increasing environmental regulations
  • Corporate sustainability goals
  • Growing awareness of circular economy solutions
