Bengaluru: Karnataka has announced plans to establish India’s first government-led Artificial Intelligence (AI) University along with a dedicated AI Hub, reinforcing the state’s ambition to become a global centre for artificial intelligence, innovation, and advanced technology.
The announcement was made by Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar while inaugurating Google I/O Connect India 2026 at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC). The initiative forms part of Karnataka’s long-term strategy to strengthen research, talent development, startup innovation, and AI-led economic growth.
AI University to Build Future-Ready Talent
The proposed AI University will focus on creating a highly skilled workforce capable of meeting the growing demand for artificial intelligence expertise across industries.
The institution is expected to promote advanced research, facilitate industry-academia collaboration, and encourage innovation in emerging technologies. By bringing together educational institutions, government agencies, and private enterprises, the university aims to strengthen India’s AI ecosystem and prepare professionals for the rapidly evolving digital economy.
AI Hub to Support Startups and Innovation
Alongside the university, Karnataka will establish a dedicated AI Hub designed to serve as an innovation and incubation centre for startups, researchers, entrepreneurs, and technology companies.
The AI Hub will provide a collaborative platform for developing, testing, and commercialising AI-driven solutions across multiple sectors. It is expected to accelerate innovation while supporting startups working on next-generation technologies.
The initiative also aims to encourage knowledge sharing between industry experts, research institutions, and government bodies.
Karnataka Targets an AI-Native Future
Speaking at the event, Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar described artificial intelligence as one of the most transformative technologies shaping the future.
He outlined the government’s vision of creating an “AI-native Karnataka,” where artificial intelligence becomes an integral part of governance and public service delivery.
According to the Chief Minister, AI has the potential to improve:
- Education and digital learning
- Healthcare services
- Agricultural advisory systems
- Citizen-centric government services
- Support for small and medium enterprises (SMEs)
- Digital governance and public administration
The government believes wider AI adoption can improve efficiency, enhance accessibility, and strengthen public service delivery across the state.
Building on Karnataka’s Technology Leadership
Karnataka continues to play a leading role in India’s technology sector.
The Chief Minister noted that the state contributes nearly 40% of India’s software exports and is home to more than 17,000 startups, making Bengaluru one of the world’s leading innovation and startup ecosystems.
The city also hosts one of the country’s largest concentrations of Global Capability Centres (GCCs) operated by multinational corporations.
To support future AI growth, the government plans to further strengthen digital infrastructure, including data centres, cloud computing capabilities, and advanced computing facilities required for AI development.
Greater Collaboration with Global Technology Companies
During the event, the Chief Minister invited Google to deepen its engagement with Karnataka by supporting AI innovation across key sectors.
He encouraged greater collaboration in developing AI solutions for:
- Education
- Healthcare
- Agriculture
- Climate resilience
- Urban mobility
- Public governance
The state also called on technology companies to strengthen AI education, support startup incubation, and help position Karnataka as a global destination for responsible and inclusive artificial intelligence.
