Israeli foodtech startup Plantopia has raised US$9 million in a funding round led by Schreiber Foods, one of the world’s leading dairy companies, and Siddhi Capital, a venture capital firm focused on food and agriculture innovation.
The investment will help the company transition from the research and development phase to commercial-scale production as it seeks to accelerate the adoption of sustainable dairy alternatives through advanced biotechnology.
Funding to Accelerate Commercial Production
Plantopia plans to use the fresh capital to establish commercial manufacturing capabilities and scale its proprietary technology platform.
The company is currently building a production facility at Kibbutz Sdot Yam in Israel, which will serve as the foundation for manufacturing its plant-based dairy proteins at scale.
The move marks an important milestone for the startup as it prepares to bring its technology to the global food industry.
Developing Dairy Proteins Through Molecular Farming
Founded in 2018 by Prof. Alexander Vainstein, Tal Lutzky, and Amir Tiroler, Plantopia is developing sustainable dairy proteins using molecular farming, an emerging biotechnology that enables plants to produce complex proteins traditionally obtained from animals.
Unlike conventional dairy production, molecular farming uses plants as biological production systems, reducing dependence on livestock while lowering the environmental footprint associated with dairy manufacturing.
The technology aims to provide food manufacturers with functional dairy proteins that closely replicate the taste, texture, and performance of conventional dairy ingredients.
Casein: Plantopia’s Flagship Innovation
Plantopia’s first commercial product is casein, the primary protein found in milk that plays a critical role in determining the texture, elasticity, and melting properties of cheese.
Casein has historically been one of the most challenging dairy proteins to replicate using plant-based ingredients.
By producing casein through molecular farming, Plantopia aims to help manufacturers create plant-based cheeses that deliver functionality and consumer experience similar to traditional dairy products.
The innovation could address one of the biggest challenges facing the alternative dairy industry—developing products that closely match conventional cheese in taste, texture, and cooking performance.
Leadership on the Company’s Next Growth Phase
Commenting on the funding, Tal Lutzky, CEO and Co-founder of Plantopia, said:
“Having completed the development stages that have been our focus in recent years, we are now moving into commercial production.”
Highlighting the importance of the company’s new production facility, Hagai Stadler, Founding Partner at AP Partners, said:
“The facility currently under construction in Kibbutz Sdot Yam will mark an important step toward establishing an innovative, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable platform for producing plant-based dairy proteins.”
Growing Demand for Sustainable Food Innovation
The global food industry is witnessing increasing demand for sustainable protein alternatives as consumers, food manufacturers, and governments seek solutions that reduce environmental impact while maintaining product quality.
Innovations such as molecular farming are gaining momentum because they offer the potential to:
- Reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional dairy farming
- Lower land and water consumption
- Improve production efficiency
- Support sustainable food supply chains
- Deliver high-quality functional ingredients for alternative dairy products
As investment in food technology continues to grow, startups developing next-generation protein solutions are attracting significant interest from strategic investors and venture capital firms.
FoodTech Investment Continues to Expand
The funding round also reflects increasing investor confidence in the future of FoodTech, alternative proteins, and sustainable food production.
Strategic backing from Schreiber Foods, a global dairy company, demonstrates growing collaboration between traditional food manufacturers and emerging biotechnology companies working to develop next-generation food ingredients.
With additional capital, Plantopia aims to accelerate commercialization, strengthen manufacturing capabilities, and support food companies seeking innovative plant-based dairy solutions.
Looking Ahead
As demand for environmentally sustainable food production continues to rise, Plantopia is positioning itself at the intersection of biotechnology and food innovation. The company’s molecular farming platform has the potential to reshape dairy protein production by offering scalable, sustainable alternatives that closely match the functionality of conventional dairy ingredients.
With its transition to commercial production now underway, Plantopia is expected to play an increasingly important role in the evolving global alternative dairy market.
