SEMICON India 2026 Day 2: 25 Deals and Collaborations Push India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem Forward

Day 2 of SEMICON India 2026 saw 25 strategic announcements and collaborations across India’s semiconductor value chain, as companies and institutions stepped up efforts around manufacturing, materials, advanced packaging, logistics, chip design, power electronics and workforce development.

The second day followed a strong opening, with nearly 12,000 visitors attending on Day 1, most of them industry participants. The exhibition features more than 600 exhibitors, including around 300 international companies.

Addressing the media, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said participation was higher on the second day, with strong business-to-business engagement and several agreements being concluded during meetings.

Country roundtables also drew participation from more than 30 companies each from Japan and Singapore, alongside companies from South Korea and European countries including Belgium, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Vaishnaw said the participation reflected growing international interest in expanding semiconductor-related activities in India.

Semiconductor Supply Chain Takes Centre Stage

A major focus on Day 2 was strengthening the domestic supply chain required to support semiconductor manufacturing.

The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and Nippon Express Holdings signed an MoU covering semiconductor logistics, warehousing, customs and related supply-chain capabilities.

The agreement comes as India seeks to develop logistics infrastructure capable of handling the specialised requirements of semiconductor manufacturing and create more resilient supply chains.

Several agreements involving Tata Electronics also focused on localising critical manufacturing inputs.

These included:

  • Tata Electronics and INOX Air Products — high-purity gases for semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Tata Electronics and Sumitomo Chemical — high-purity wet chemicals and advanced front-end materials.
  • Tata Electronics and Kelington Engineering — gas distribution systems, high-purity piping and process-tool hook-up for fab readiness.
  • C-MET Pune and Hindalco Industries — critical raw materials for the semiconductor ecosystem.
  • Tata Electronics and Enomoto — lead-frame manufacturing and advanced packaging localisation.

Together, the partnerships highlight the effort to develop semiconductor capabilities beyond fabrication facilities and build a wider network of domestic suppliers.

Tata Electronics Expands Semiconductor Partnerships

Tata Electronics was involved in several Day 2 announcements covering manufacturing, materials, packaging and technology.

The company also entered into a strategic partnership with L&T Semiconductor Technologies to explore manufacturing L&T semiconductor products at Tata Electronics’ fab and OSAT facilities, initially focusing on consumer-grade camera modules.

The companies are developing a semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem around Tata Electronics’ investments in India, including its planned fab and assembly and testing operations.

India Pushes Indigenous Power Electronics

Power electronics was another significant area of activity.

MeitY, the Ministry of Power and POWERGRID agreed to collaborate on the indigenisation of Silicon Carbide (SiC) power modules for voltage-source-converter-based HVDC transmission systems.

The technology is planned for a pilot at POWERGRID’s 1,000 MW Pusauli project in Bihar.

Meanwhile, L&T Semiconductor Technologies announced collaborations covering:

  • Power electronics for air-conditioning and solar-powered systems with Virtual Forest.
  • SiC power modules for renewable energy systems and AI data centres with Newen Systems.
  • Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors for renewable-energy applications with Fimer India.
  • IoT modules for smart meters with Capital Power Systems.

The developments point to an expanding role for semiconductor technologies in India’s renewable-energy, power-grid and digital-infrastructure ambitions.

India Unveils Indigenous System-on-Module

One of the key technology announcements was the launch of India’s first indigenous System-on-Module, ISC-VEGA-SOM, developed by IndieSemiC and C-DAC.

The module integrates C-DAC’s VEGA Thejas32 processor with IndieSemiC’s globally certified LoRa-RF module.

Developed under C-DAC’s Industry Support Centre initiative, the product represents an effort to move Indian semiconductor designs from chip development into commercial products.

The government said the development demonstrates how Indian design companies supported by the Design Linked Incentive programme are progressing towards bringing semiconductor products to market.

Advanced Packaging Gains Momentum

Advanced packaging emerged as another important component of India’s semiconductor strategy.

Kaynes Semicon and IndieSemiC agreed to collaborate on qualification, assembly and testing of advanced packages, including QFN and BGA, as well as customised System-in-Package development.

Kaynes Semicon also entered collaborations with Microchip Technology and GridCrest Technologies to explore an end-to-end India pathway for energy-metering system-on-chip solutions.

Separately, Kaynes Semicon and United BC Team agreed to develop a phased roadmap for advanced intralogistics and lights-out semiconductor manufacturing.

Skilling Becomes a Major Semiconductor Priority

Several Day 2 agreements focused on developing the workforce required for India’s semiconductor expansion.

SEMI and the India Deep Tech Alliance announced plans for the India Semiconductor Academy, an industry-led national skilling platform involving companies and academic institutions.

The initiative is expected to involve organisations including Cadence, CG Semi, Dixon Technologies, Micron Technology, Synopsys, 3D Glass Solutions, UC San Diego and IIT Kanpur.

Other workforce initiatives included:

  • NIELIT and Siemens EDA — semiconductor design education using industry-grade EDA tools.
  • NIELIT and Tata Electronics — training for the ATMP workforce.
  • NIELIT and Singapore Polytechnic International — semiconductor education and skills development.
  • NIELIT and SCL — launch of an indigenous 0.8-micron Open-Source Process Design Kit (PDK) on the eChipHub platform.
  • NIELIT and IESA — semiconductor workforce development.
  • NIELIT and SEMI University — training, certification and faculty development.

The initiatives underline the growing emphasis on creating an industry-ready talent pipeline alongside physical semiconductor infrastructure.

Deep-Tech Investment and Design Infrastructure

The India Deep Tech Alliance reported investments of $263 million across 56 Indian deep-tech companies, highlighting increasing capital flows into technology-intensive startups.

Silvaco and C-DAC’s ChipIN Centre also announced collaboration to provide advanced TCAD tools to startups and MSMEs onboarded under the Design Linked Incentive programme, along with C-DAC’s research and training initiatives.

These initiatives aim to improve access to specialised semiconductor design and simulation tools for emerging companies.

Sustainability Enters the Semiconductor Infrastructure Agenda

Vaishnaw also highlighted resource efficiency in semiconductor and technology infrastructure.

He pointed to extensive water recycling in semiconductor fabs and closed-loop cooling systems in data centres as examples of technologies that can reduce resource consumption as these industries scale.

For India, sustainability is becoming increasingly relevant as semiconductor fabs, data centres and advanced manufacturing facilities require significant infrastructure and resource inputs.

SEMICON India 2026 is being held at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, from September 17 to 19.

The event features:

The second day of the event demonstrates that India’s semiconductor push is extending beyond chip fabrication into materials, equipment, logistics, packaging, power electronics, design and talent.

With 25 announcements and collaborations spanning these areas, SEMICON India 2026 is showcasing an ecosystem-building approach aimed at increasing India’s participation across the global semiconductor value chain.
