MUMBAI, Aug 6 ( Entrepreneur News Network): The headline number tells you how many jobs are coming. It does not tell you which skill to build, or how the people already inside these companies are quietly getting there first.
The Number: 510,452
India’s Global Capability Centres are on track to cross half a million new hires for the first time in 2026. The foundit Insights Tracker puts the full-year figure at 510,452 roles, a 12% increase over 2025 and a 3.4-fold jump since 2021 — a five-year compound annual growth rate of roughly 27.4%. The projection is already backed by hard numbers: India recorded 227,991 actual GCC hires in the first half of 2026 alone, up 11% year on year, spread across close to 2,120 GCCs now operating in the country.

What makes this figure notable is the contrast with the rest of the market. India’s broader white-collar hiring was actually shrinking at the same time — the foundit Insights Tracker recorded a 5% month-on-month and 9% year-on-year decline in overall hiring activity in June 2026. GCCs are expanding while the general job market cools, which is precisely why the composition of that GCC hiring — not just its size — is the part worth paying attention to.
The Number Inside the Number: 64%
Nearly two in three new GCC roles created in 2026 now require AI, data science or intelligent automation skills, according to the same foundit tracker. AI, Data Science and Analytics is the fastest-growing hiring function inside GCCs, up 38% year on year, ahead of core technology and software hiring at 31%. Technology and software, together with banking, financial services and insurance, still account for 56% of all GCC hiring — but the skills layered on top of those roles have shifted decisively toward AI in the past three years.

Kapil Joshi, CEO of IT Staffing at Quess Corp, frames the shift in scale terms: three years ago, emerging technology areas — AI, data, cloud, cybersecurity and platform engineering — accounted for about 32% of overall hiring demand and roughly 30% of GCC hiring specifically. Today those categories account for over 40% of hiring demand economy-wide, and nearly 60% of hiring demand inside GCCs. The base of India’s GCC hiring hasn’t just grown; its center of gravity has moved.
What the 64% Doesn’t Tell You
A 64% AI-skills requirement sounds like a hiring instruction: go get an AI certificate. A separate report — Quess Corp’s India GCC Tech Talent Landscape, Q1 FY27 — suggests that’s not actually how most of these roles are getting filled. GCCs are meeting AI-skill demand less through external hires with AI degrees and more by moving existing engineers sideways into adjacent, AI-relevant roles they’re already one step away from.

This pattern, which Joshi calls “talent orchestration,” rests on a simple economic reality: the market cannot supply purpose-built AI talent fast enough, so companies are reskilling the engineers they already have into the roles adjacent to their existing expertise, rather than competing for a shrinking pool of specialists from outside.
The Gap the Adjacency Strategy Is Trying to Close
The reskilling push exists because the alternative — external hiring alone — is running into a hard supply constraint. Quess Corp’s Q1 FY27 report puts the supply-demand gap in AI and Data & Analytics roles at 36-40%, the widest of any category it tracks, ahead of Platform Engineering (32-36%), Cloud & Infrastructure Engineering (28-32%) and Cybersecurity & Risk Management (28-33%).

For the most specialised AI roles, the shortage is far more severe than the headline 40% figure suggests. “For specialised roles such as AI architects, prompt engineers and AI governance specialists, shortages rise to 70-80%,” Joshi told Business Today. “In practical terms, for every ten open roles, there may be only two or three qualified active candidates available.”

Joshi also notes that the useful life of a technology skill has itself compressed to under two years, which is part of why one-time certification isn’t the answer GCCs are betting on — a static credential earned today is a depreciating asset within 24 months, while an adjacency-based internal move keeps pace with what the employer actually needs next.
Buy, Borrow, Build: The Workforce Strategy Behind the Numbers
Quess Corp describes GCCs as now running three parallel talent strategies at once, rather than defaulting to external hiring alone.
- Buy — lateral hiring from the external market, still necessary but increasingly expensive and slow for specialised roles.
- Borrow — subcontracting and flexible staffing, which has risen from about 18% of GCC talent requirements three years ago to nearly 26% today.
- Build — reskilling and redeploying existing employees, which now accounts for an estimated 25-40% of GCC roles being filled through internal movement.
The practical effect is that a meaningful share of the 510,452 roles projected for 2026 will never appear as an external job posting at all — they’ll be filled by someone already on the payroll moving one adjacency over, often before the role is even advertised.
What This Means, Practically
If you’re the professional
The actionable move isn’t “get an AI certificate” in the abstract — it’s mapping your current role against the specific adjacency pattern GCCs are already using to fill roles. If you’re a backend developer, applied AI engineering isn’t a hypothetical future track; it’s where the 2026 hiring data says your peers are already being moved. If you’re a data engineer, the AI data platform engineering track is the one your employer is most likely to route you toward internally, with or without your input. The question worth asking isn’t whether your role will be touched by this shift — at 64% of new roles requiring AI-adjacent skills, it almost certainly will be — but whether you get there on your own terms or find out when a manager reassigns you into it.
If you’re the GCC hiring manager
A 64% AI-skills requirement set against a 36-40% supply-demand gap means external recruiting alone cannot close the hole — the math doesn’t work, especially at the 70-80% shortage rates for the most specialised roles. The stronger lever this year is internal mobility: building a formal, visible pathway for engineers to move into AI-adjacent roles before competitors’ recruiters find them first. Joshi’s framing is blunt on this point — GCCs “can no longer be mere consumers of talent. They must become creators of talent.”
The Question Worth Sitting With
If you mapped your current role against the nearest AI-adjacent role at your own company today, would you already be halfway there — or starting from zero? The 510,452 number is a hiring forecast. The 64% and the 36-40% gap underneath it are a much more specific instruction: the movement is already happening inside GCCs, one adjacency at a time, and the professionals who map their own path onto it early are the ones least likely to be reassigned into it by surprise.
