Dubai: Thousands of users across multiple regions experienced service disruptions on ChatGPT on Tuesday after OpenAI confirmed an outage affecting several of its AI-powered services. The issue primarily impacted image generation, while some users also reported problems accessing older conversations, Custom GPTs, Codex, and workspace-related features.
The disruption triggered a spike in user complaints on outage monitoring platform Downdetector, where users reported error messages, slow response times, and failed image generation requests.
Image Generation Among the Worst-Hit Features
According to user reports, the most common issue involved ChatGPT’s AI image generation capabilities. Many users were unable to create images, with requests either timing out or returning unexpected error messages.
In addition to image generation, some users experienced difficulties accessing previous chat histories and other advanced ChatGPT features. However, basic text-based conversations continued to function normally for many users during the disruption.
OpenAI Confirms Ongoing Investigation
OpenAI acknowledged the outage through its official status page, confirming that multiple products experienced elevated error rates.
The affected services included:
- ChatGPT
- Codex
- Custom GPTs
- Workspace Analytics
- Conversation Search
- ChatGPT User Invites
- Compliance Logs Platform download endpoint
The company stated that its engineering teams were actively investigating the issue to restore full functionality.
Core Services Restored, Some Features Still Impacted
In a later update, OpenAI announced that core ChatGPT functionality had been restored. However, it noted that several enterprise and workspace-related features continued to experience issues.
According to the company, ongoing problems remained in:
- FedRAMP workspaces
- Codex
- Workspace Analytics
- Conversation Search
- Custom GPT search
- ChatGPT user invitation system
- Compliance Logs Platform download endpoint
OpenAI said it is continuing to work on resolving the remaining issues and will provide additional updates as more information becomes available.

Downdetector Records Surge in User Reports
As the outage spread, Downdetector recorded a sharp increase in complaints from users worldwide. Most reports centered on image generation failures, while others highlighted login delays, slow performance, and intermittent service interruptions.
The incident once again highlights the growing dependence on AI-powered productivity tools and the importance of maintaining reliable cloud infrastructure as millions of users rely on generative AI platforms for daily work.
Growing Demand Brings Infrastructure Challenges
ChatGPT has become one of the world’s most widely used AI assistants, supporting tasks ranging from content creation and coding to research and image generation. As adoption continues to grow across consumers and enterprises, even short service interruptions can impact productivity for businesses, developers, and creators worldwide.
OpenAI has not yet disclosed the exact cause of the outage but said it will continue to share updates until all services return to normal.
